What's happening in the park?

Meersbrook tennis courts gets green light for regeneration. After 4 years of hard-work, Meersbrook Park Users Trust has finally secured all the funding required to go ahead with plans to regenerate the tennis courts in Meersbrook Park.
Work has just begun on transforming this popular site into a Multi-Use Games Area, or MUGA, which will provide facilities for football, basketball, tennis, netball and cricket.
The Trust began their campaign in 2008, after they heard of plans to remove the fence and leave the site to become derelict. But after a fantastic response from local residents and the delivery of a petition to Sheffield City Council, the Trust has been working closely with officers from the Parks & Countryside Department to secure enough funding to complete the project. Funding has now been secured from the Big Lottery’s Community Spaces as well as funds raised by local people and Sheffield City Council to make it go ahead.

Martinez, from the Tennis Courts Fundraising Committee, paid tribute to Sheffield City Council for supporting this much needed project:
“We are really excited that after 4 years of fundraising, work can finally begin on updating this really popular sports facility in our local park. Sheffield City Council replaced the wall holding a bank of soil off the courts last summer, but at that point we still needed to raise the majority of the funds for the project. Now that we have, its really exciting to finally see the diggers on site and the work begin!”
The work on the tennis courts will take approximately 6 weeks to complete. During this time the site will be inaccessible to park users and we are sorry for any inconvenience caused during the regeneration.

Meersbrook Park offers stunning views of the city, a secret walled garden and The Bishops house one of the oldest buildings in Sheffield. On snowy days the sleep slope attract people from across the city to experience high speed and hair raising toboganing.

There is a popular new play area funded by local volunteers that provides a community meeting point. Other facilities in the park include a bowling green, skate bowl, community building, youth shelter, dog free zone, multi use games area and an all weather football pitch.

Meersbrook Park Users Trust is a group of local volunteers interested in the improvement and preservation of the park. Working with the community, the council and local groups we hope to be an open forum for people to become involved.
